Monterey AVA
|
The Monterey appellation begins north of the Monterey Bay and extends to the southern border near Paso Robles. The AVA is diverse in terms of climate and soil type and is known for the longest cool-climate growing season in the United States. Bud break occurs two weeks earlier and harvest starts two weeks later than Sonoma Coast. Warm spring temperatures provide an ideal cushion against spring frosts. Fog drifts into the Salinas Valley off the cold Monterey Bay and blankets the valley each evening, slowly burning off throughout the day. Monterey can be characterized by strong, gusty winds that whip the vines, lowering yields. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive in the northern and central part of the AVA where the long growing season provides the vineyards with an extended hang time, which delivers complex and intense flavors without overwhelming ripeness.
