Arroyo Seco

Arroyo Seco, Spanish for “dry riverbed,” is treasured for its unique terroir and cool climate. Nested within the larger Monterey County AVA, it begins near the foot of the Santa Lucia Mountains and features rolling vineyards that follow the Arroyo Seco River east to the Salinas Valley. This seasonal waterway brings rain and snowmelt from the Santa Lucia Mountains to the Salinas River.

Although the Arroyo Seco wine region lies 40 miles from Monterey Bay, it is profoundly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. The Blue Grand Canyon deep-sea trench, near Monterey’s coast, drives morning and evening fog, along with brisk afternoon breezes, which funnel through the Santa Lucia and Gabilan Mountains into the vineyards. This cool air tempers the intense summer sun, creating a long, gentle growing season that’s perfect for cultivating Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Chardonnay Characteristics

Arroyo Seco Chardonnay, celebrated for its rich texture and subtle minerality, is compellingly expressed in La Crema’s unctuous style with baked apple, honeydew melon, lemon curd, subtle spice, and wet stone notes.

Pinot Noir Characteristics

Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir, known for its plush texture and nuanced complexity, is elegantly captured in La Crema’s velvety expression with bright red fruits and tea notes.

Greenfield “Potatoes”

Arroyo Seco’s terroir is shaped by its rocky soils and demanding growing conditions, which give rise to the region’s complex, flavorful wines. The area is dotted with large river rock stones, affectionately called “Greenfield potatoes.” These potato-shaped stones ensure excellent water drainage and retain heat, protecting the vines from freezing and creating ideal conditions for growth.

Furthermore, the loose, loam soils in the region cause the vines to struggle to reach for every nutrient they can find. As in life, struggle builds character, and this challenge for the vines results in grapes with lovely, layered flavors.
